Would you rather be a nurse or a barber during a pandemic?

McDonald’s has been offering to provide a free meal daily to health care providers and other workers who are on the “frontline” of our defense against coronavirus. Jane and I took advantage the other day and received $12.00 worth of free food. That was genuinely nice of McDonald’s. I figured that we could have saved another $168 if we took two meals per day for the duration of the offer (April 22nd to May 5th).

It’s true that health care workers face increased risk these days and we appreciated being recognized for that. But Jane and I are more fortunate than many. We haven’t lost our livelihood. A lot of people are suffering more than we are likely to suffer. I sent an email to McDonald’s to thank them. I told them that we would not come back for free food, we’ll pay. I asked them to donate the cost of that free food to provide for food and shelter for people who have lost their income. I was not surprised that I got back what was basically boilerplate. My message will be forwarded to some corporate functionary. Maybe they’ll donate the money. I hope so! Not sure how else to get the message across and the job done. If you have a thought, please comment.
